We left NYC at 2 and headed to the Garden State Parkway for the Cape May Ferry. The NJ Turnpike is pretty terrible in general, so although this added time to the trip, it was well worth it. After sitting in a decent amount of Jersey Shore traffic, we made it to the ferry. It was pretty enjoyable. Had a few bro brews up top and then I took a nice nap on one of the benches. After cruising the high seas for about 1 ½ hours and 17 glorious miles, we made it safely to Delaware to finish off the last leg of the day’s journey.
I took over at the wheel as we left the dock. Hunger started setting in after a half-hour of driving, so I suggested we get some Subway. Apparently, they sell $5 foot longs, sounded really intriguing. Sean said he wasn’t hungry, but then something beautiful happened… a shining beacon of hope glowed in the distance. A sign so magnificent, it brought tears to our eyes. We had finally found a Sonic. We’ve been taunted by their tantalizing commercials over the past 6 years even though there were none to be found in the greater DC area. As we drove towards the drive-in with anticipation, we needed to make sure it wasn’t a mirage. It was real and it was fantastic. Breakfast all day and they brought out the meal on roller skates. Incredible.
After refueling on Steak and Egg and Tater Tot burritos, French toast sticks, corn dogs, and limeade chillers, we were ready to shore it up. We arrived at the Marshall residence on Gooseneck Road about 10:30, so we were only 4 hours off in our estimated arrival. We caught the ass-end of the fireworks down the block and had a quick drink before hitting up the new addition to the house… the fire pit! I guess this is a new Marshall family tradition and we were elated. The fire was pretty sick thanks to the handiwork of Erik and Kenneth’s newspapers. Then we feasted on s’mores amongst a fire pit friendship session. It was so 3008, not 2000 and late. Great night.
